Has Salary Discrimination Really Disappeared From Major League Baseball?
Analysis of a detailed data set for the 2000-2001 period shows no evidence of overall racial or ethnic salary discrimination for baseball players. Given prior research, that finding is not unusual. However, when the data set is divided into low, middle, and high salary ranges, a RESST test shows that minorities in the lowest salary group receive significantly lower returns to their skills than do whites. A decomposition of the wage differences for the lowest salary group shows that as much as 86.3% of the black/white and 91.5% of the Hispanic/white salary gap may be due to discrimination.

A daze fastener system for connecting two or more structural elements wherein the structural elements and fastener parts have substantially different coefficient of thermal expansion physical property characteristics is employed in this invention. By providing frusto-conical abutting surfaces between the structural elements and fastener parts any differences in thermal expansion/contraction between the parts is translated to sliding motion and avoids deleterious thermal stresses in the connection. An essential feature for isotropic homogeneous material connections is that at least two sets of mating surfaces are required wherein each set of mating surfaces has line element extensions that pass through a common point
Wind erosion in semiarid landscapes: Predictive models and remote sensing methods for the influence of vegetation
Wind erosion in semi-arid regions is a significant problem for which the sheltering effect of rangeland vegetation is poorly understood. Individual plants may be considered as porous roughness elements which absorb or redistribute the wind's momentum. The saltation threshold is the minimum wind velocity at which soil movement begins. The dependence of the saltation threshold on geometrical parameters of a uniform roughness array was studied in a wind tunnel. Both solid and porous elements were used to determine relationships between canopy structure and the threshold velocity for soil transport. The development of a predictive relation for the influence of vegetation canopy structure on wind erosion of soil is discussed
Cryogenic Insulation System
This invention relates to reusable, low density, high temperature cryogenic foam insulation systems and the process for their manufacture. A pacing technology for liquid hydrogen fueled, high speed aircraft is the development of a fully reusable, flight weight cryogenic insulation system for propellant tank structures. In the invention cryogenic foam insulation is adhesively bonded to the outer wall of the fuel tank structure. The cryogenic insulation consists of square sheets fabricated from an array of abutting square blocks. Each block consists of a sheet of glass cloth adhesively bonded between two layers of polymethacrylimide foam. Each block is wrapped in a vapor impermeable membrane, such as Kapton(R) aluminum Kapton(R), to provide a vapor barrier. Very beneficial results can be obtained by employing the present invention in conjunction with fibrous insulation and an outer aeroshell, a hot fuselage structure with an internal thermal protection system

We discuss and prove a theorem which asserts that any n-dimensional
semi-Riemannian manifold can be locally embedded in a (n+1)-dimensional space
with a non-degenerate Ricci tensor which is equal, up to a local analytic
diffeomorphism, to the Ricci tensor of an arbitrary specified space. This may
be regarded as a further extension of the Campbell-Magaard theorem. We
highlight the significance of embedding theorems of increasing degrees of
generality in the context of higher dimensional spacetimes theories and
illustrate the new theorem by establishing the embedding of a general class of
Ricci-flat spacetimes
Science Enabled by the Ares V: A Large Monolithic Telescope Placed at the Second Sun-Earth Lagrange Point
The payload mass and volume capabilities of the planned Ares V launch vehicle provide the science community with unprecedented opportunities to place large science payloads into low earth orbit and beyond. One example, the outcome of a recent study conducted at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, is a large, monolithic telescope with a primary mirror diameter of 6.2 meters placed into a halo orbit about the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, or L2, approximately 1.5 million kin beyond Earth's orbit. Operating in the visible and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such a large telescope would allow astronomers to detect bio-signatures and characterize the atmospheres of transiting exoplanets, provide high resolution imaging three or more times better than the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope, and observe the ultraviolet light from warm baryonic matter
Computer generated animation and movie production at LARC: A case study
The process of producing computer generated 16mm movies using the MOVIE.BYU software package developed by Brigham Young University and the currently available hardware technology at the Langley Research Center is described. A general overview relates the procedures to a specific application. Details are provided which describe the data used, preparation of a storyboard, key frame generation, the actual animation, title generation, filming, and processing/developing the final product. Problems encountered in each of these areas are identified. Both hardware and software problems are discussed along with proposed solutions and recommendations
SMP: A solid modeling program version 2.0
The Solid Modeling Program (SMP) provides the capability to model complex solid objects through the composition of primitive geometric entities. In addition to the construction of solid models, SMP has extensive facilities for model editing, display, and analysis. The geometric model produced by the software system can be output in a format compatible with existing analysis programs such as PATRAN-G. The present version of the SMP software supports six primitives: boxes, cones, spheres, paraboloids, tori, and trusses. The details for creating each of the major primitive types is presented. The analysis capabilities of SMP, including interfaces to existing analysis programs, are discussed
Sequestering CP Violation and GIM-Violation with Warped Extra Dimensions
We propose a model of spontaneous CP violation to address the strong CP
problem in warped extra dimensions that relies on sequestering flavor and CP
violation. We assume that brane-localized Higgs Yukawa interactions respect a
U(3) flavor symmetry that is broken only by bulk fermion mass and Yukawa terms.
All CP violation arises from the vev of a CP-odd scalar field localized in the
bulk. To suppress radiative corrections to theta-bar, the doublet quarks in
this model are localized on the IR brane. We calculate constraints from
flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), precision electroweak measurements,
CKM unitarity, and the electric dipole moments in this model and predict
theta-bar to be at least about 10^-12.Comment: 38 page
Curved dilatonic brane-worlds and the cosmological constant problem
We construct a model for dilatonic brane worlds with constant curvature on
the brane, i.e. a non-zero four-dimensional cosmological constant, given in
function of the dilaton coupling and the cosmological constant of the bulk. We
compare this family of solutions to other known dilatonic domain wall solutions
and apply a self-tunning mechanism to check the stability of our solutions
